What is Corporate Social Responsibility, and Why Should You Care?

School districts nationwide are incorporating social responsibility into their character, citizenship, and civics education programming.  When these students hit college, however, this basic “social responsibility” lesson turns into Corporate Social Responsibility, or CSR.

CSR is the idea that a corporation, business, organization, or entity has a social obligation to act in ways that benefit society as a whole.  It means those organizations or companies must weigh their decisions carefully, and take actions that contribute to the well-being of society and the environment, rather than focusing solely on maximizing profits or personal gain. Acting in a socially responsible way as an organization means recognizing the impact that our actions have on others and taking steps to ensure that this impact is positive, rather than harmful.

Social responsibility can look like many things.  It can look like moving from plastic to paper straws or removing single-use plastics.  It can look like charitable giving or ethical business practices. It can look like sustainable practices and choices that put the good of many over unhindered profits.

Here at, we recognize that we are part of a larger community, beyond our HQ in New York. Beyond the schools in this nation. Beyond the borders of the United States.  From sourcing components to reaching underserved students at home and abroad, we tend to take actions that reflect our commitment to creating a better world for everyone – and we believe that STEM and technology are paths to solving many problems, big and small.

But those problems will only be solved if STEM learning and technology education are provided to every student, everywhere.
