40+ STEM Scholarship Opportunities for 2021

Rebecca Gray Parents

You should know STEM occupations bring in more money, on average than non-STEM jobs.  This knowledge makes STEM majors an easy sell to parents scouting colleges with their STEM-loving high school seniors.  But you know what’s not an easy sell?  That tuition breakdown.  Sticker-shock is an understatement. So what’s the solution?

Answer:  A STEM Scholarship. (Hip! Hip! Hooray! Three cheers from our bank accounts!)

Mountains of debt lurk around the corner, waiting to jump out at STEM graduates as soon as they exit the gates of their higher education institution.  STEM Graduates seeking to further their education through a master’s or doctorate degree may choose to throw in the towel on their additional education when facing this burden of payments and interest.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics, tuition, fees, and room and board for the 2018-2019 academic year carried massive price-tags:

  • $17,797 on average at public institutions

  • $26,261 on average at private “for-profit” institutions

  • And a whopping $46,014 at private “non-profit” institutions

Quick math tells us that full-time enrollment at a private non-profit institution for four years (we’re talking bachelor’s degree here people – not a master’s or a doctorate) can easily tally up to the price of a solid 3 bedroom home.  Giving our high school students a fighting chance of getting out of debt starts with STEM scholarships – and you might be surprised at just how many are out there for high school students interested in STEM fields, and undergrads majoring in STEM subjects.

At Thimble, we love all things STEM education-related and even have our own scholarship program (Check it out below this list!).  Helping students earn a STEM degree is a priority we are clearly not alone in valuing.

What is STEM?

STEM is the acronym educators use to refer to the overarching idea that science, technology, engineering, and math are incontrovertibly linked.  STEM is an interdisciplinary approach to equipping our students with the 21st-century skills needed to innovate and change the world.

It is a term coined by Dr. Judith Ramaley, and is used by educators and politicians alike.  It’s often used to refer to the kind of curriculum needed to help students aim for, break into, and succeed confidently in an ever-advancing workforce.

There are virtually hundreds, if not thousands of job titles that fall under the STEM umbrella.  From computer science, industrial engineering, and biology, to information systems and physics.  Doctors, data analysts, and even your child’s chemistry teacher are all part of a large spectrum of professionals who needed STEM learning to get where they are.

What are STEM Scholarships?

A STEM scholarship is often a monetary award guaranteed to high school students entering college for a STEM major.  These scholarships are of varying amounts- with eligibility requirements that often dictate the recipient must be entering a 4-year college to gain a bachelor’s in a STEM-related field.

High school sophomores and juniors are often tasked with choosing their own elective classes and filling their schedules with credits to graduate.  Quality career and guidance counselors will hopefully be encouraging students to take classes that not only appeal to them intellectually, but that will also create a basic foundation for their undergraduate degree.  But preparing students intellectually is not enough.  Financial barriers can be insurmountable without proper guidance.  Depending on the level of overwhelm, high school guidance counselors may not be giving students all the essay and deadline information available.  This is where parents (and students!) can take their higher education mission into their own hands.

If entering a STEM field of study is something you know you or your graduating student is planning for, leverage scholarships (and Ramen Noodles) to keep their post-college debt at a minimum.  We’ve gathered all the information you need to utilize some incredible programs giving scholarship recipients award money and/or internship opportunities and work experience.
